This custom cover is hand made one at a time by a single craftsman. It's often hard to get one although hundreds have been sold, there's never many available and they seem to disappear quickly after posting.

Because we're Individuals

Another cold and wet Saturday, I find myself sewing in my warm shop and listening to public radio.  A creative day, distanced from thoughts of real work, provides plenty of opportunity to ponder lives mysteries.  As I reflected over the past two years of making Kindle covers, I pondered the reasons someone would purchase something handmade, imperfections and all, considering the number of factory products available.

I considered the reasons I often purchase products at local craft shows. My reasons include the fact that handmade items are more than just a product.  There is love, creativity and uniqueness.  I feel a more personal connection than selecting an item from a display of a mega store.  I think about the stories told by my grandmother when handmade items were practically the only thing available.  Although I haven’t been to a mall in years, I thought about my experience in purchasing handmade products.  There was no fighting for a parking place or pushing a shopping car with a bad wheel. 

I have a weakness for original paintings from unrecognized artist simply for the thought that a fellow human touched that canvas, by nature it’s unique and their joy and creative spirit is embedded in that creation.  It has inbuilt positive energy and soul that is different from buying one of a million made in a factory by a machine.  I feel like I am purchasing something that is not only very personal to me but to the crafts person. 

I don’t know the reason my covers continue to be in demand with so many alternatives available.  I have a hunch it might be simply because we are unique individuals with an innate desire to be just a little different from the crowd.
